Worm: “It feels good” to be in British Formula 3
Amongst all the hubbub and excitement of the BRDC British Formula 3 Championship’s recent annual Media Day at Snetterton, Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing was busy announcing its return to the grid with a capacity three-car line-up for 2017. The final piece of that jigsaw, joining American Chase Owen and Brit Jordan Cane at the Hathersage-based outfit, is German teenager Nick Worm and he says that “it feels good” to be racing in the UK’s premier single-seater category this year.
“It is a great experience being here and being able to drive cars with this much aerodynamic downforce,” the 16-year-old said after finishing his running on Media Day in Norfolk. “It is my first year in single-seaters so I have a lot to learn. I have a disadvantage to others on the grid as they have more experience than me, which means I need to step up my game even more. Nevertheless, I am pleased with the team’s effort and what they are doing to help me move forward.”
Worm graduates to British Formula 3 having competed in karting in his native Germany over the past few years. The Solingen-born teenager made his car racing debut in the Audi Sport TT Cup in October last year but will be making his first start in single-seaters when he lines up on the grid at Oulton Park for race one of the season on April 15th.
With his relative lack of experience to some other drivers on the grid, Worm knows he has a learning year ahead. He said: “It does take the pressure off somewhat but you still want to be pleased with the results you get. It is not that I have to finish in a certain position but of course I want to finish as high up as I can.”
Having not competed in a FIA Formula 4 category, his move into British Formula 3 was perhaps not as traditional as others but Worm stated that he has clear reasons behind his move into the UK’s leading single-seater championship. “The opportunities here in getting to know the car and to test are definitely better than a European championship. I had good contacts with the team, which is another reason why I chose British F3, and I also had friends who recommended the championship to me.”
Worm flew over from Germany to attend the joint British GT/F3 Media Day and thoroughly enjoyed the day, which was packed with announcements, on-track testing, press conferences and tracking shots. “It was an early rise this morning but I’ve had a lot of fun and I’ve learned a lot already. I’ve been a few seconds quicker than I was when I was here last time and I am looking forward to getting even faster.”
The Hillspeed with Cliff Dempsey Racing man cannot wait to get the season underway now, with the first three races of the year taking place on Easter Weekend (April 15-17) in Cheshire. When asked if he is looking forward to getting his 2017 campaign started, Worm commented: “Yes definitely! Racing will be a whole other level as it is a different feeling and atmosphere. It definitely helps you push your own limits even further.”
