LOTTERER: Mexico City Debrief
The positivity of gaining that result for TECHEETAH really helped, especially as it pushed us into the teams’ championship lead.
Practice was OK, but I still had to learn the track and validate the sim sessions we did before we got to Mexico.
I had some experience of small parts of the track from my WEC races here, in 2016 and 2017, but obviously it wasn’t much use with such a different configuration of circuit used in Formula E.
It is quite a technical and tricky track with a lot of synchronised braking and turning zones which in Formula E is especially difficult.
My qualifying lap was great in sectors one and two and things were looking good but in sector three I struggled a bit with rear stability of the car and unfortunately I lost some time at the last chicane.
If you look at how close it was, there was the potential to be higher up.
In the race we had an issue with the first car which made life quite difficult and the rear was very difficult to control.
This made matching my energy targets every lap difficult as the minimum speeds were quite low, so I ended up consuming more energy.
At the pit stop it was initially business as usual but we had the issue with one of our mechanics who came in to contact with the car as I exited.
Of course I was happy to know he was OK afterwards but we got the penalty which sent us back to 13th position.
This was a big shame because I felt good in the second stint and we could have had seventh position at least, but at the end of the day, the most important thing is that my mechanic is ok.
So, it was tough for us, but JEV got some good points for the teams’ title campaign which we were able to extend slightly, so on the whole there were some positives for us.
I am really enjoying Formula E. It just took some time to understand everything at the beginning but I have been focused to now make it my natural habit.
I also enjoy the championship because the calendar is really cool with lots of interesting places to visit and discover new cities.
Mastering the car on these types of tracks is challenging and the quality of the field is pretty exceptional.
The challenge is huge in Formula E and the momentum is gathering massively, so the motivation to do well here is super high for me.
Everything is growing nicely and there is no doubt that this is going to be a significant part of the future of racing.
The relationship I have with the TECHEETAH team and JEV is pretty cool as we got on really well so the environment around us is really positive.
Santiago gave us some great memories and momentum for the season and we all want more of that.
Ultimately, I want to win races here with TECHEETAH, and as I said when you have that basis of a good team and a good environment it brings a very motivating atmosphere.
I can’t wait to sit in the Season Five car and get to drive it later this year to find even more performance and understand a lot more about this new era of motorsport.
