WRIGHT MOTORSPORTS SETS SIGHTS ON ROLEX 24 AT DAYTONA

After winning four IMSA championships last November at Petit Le Mans, Ohio-based race team Wright Motorsports is eager to get the 2022 WeatherTech SportsCar Championship started this week with the first race of the year: The 60th Rolex 24 at Daytona. The No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, the latest Michelin Endurance Cup Champion, will be one of 61 cars competing in the 24-hour endurance race, a capacity field for the iconic sports car racing event. Reigning Michelin Pilot Challenge champions Ryan Hardwick and Jan Heylen will be joined by last season’s GTD champion Zacharie Robichon and Porsche factory driver Richard Lietz.

Whelen Engineering drivers Tristan Nunez (Boynton Beach, Fla.) and Pipo Derani (Brazil) finished seventh in Sunday’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Roar Before the 24 100-minute qualifying race at Daytona International Speedway. Today’s finish will put the 2021 championship-winning No. 31 Whelen Engineering Cadillac DPi-V.R seventh on the DPi grid for next weekend’s 60th-running of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

The IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship’s off-season is officially over this week as all teams begin to set up at Daytona International Speedway for the Roar Before the 24, the first on-track event of the 2022 season. The Wright Motorsports roster for the prestigious Rolex 24 At Daytona at the end of this month is complete, following the addition of Porsche Factory Driver Richard Lietz to the No. 16 Porsche 911 GT3 R. PR1/Mathiasen Motorsports is pleased to announce that the team will expand to two LMP2 full time entries in the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. The #52 lineup of Ben Keating, Mikkel Jensen and Scott Huffaker will return to defend their Michelin Endurance Cup championship, along with two additional drivers to be named in 2022 that will take over the wheel of the #52 for the sprint races. Four-time Indianapolis 500 Champion Helio Castroneves will be Meyer Shank Racing’s endurance driver for the 2022 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season. Castroneves will contest in the IMSA Michelin Endurance Cup Rounds paired with full-season drivers Oliver Jarvis and Tom Blomqvist in the No. 60 MSR Acura ARX-05.

GRT GRASSER RACING OUT OF LUCK AT PETIT LE MANS

Last weekend was the final competitive outing of the 2021 motorsport season for the Grasser Racing Team. One week after the last round of this year’s ADAC GT Masters at the Nürburgring in Germany, the Knittelfeld-based outfit were back in action with their Lamborghini Huracán GT3 EVO in the USA for the last time this year. The closing fixture of the 2021 IMSA SportsCar Championship was one of the great endurance classics, the Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta. Lamborghini factory drivers Franck Perera and Michele Beretta, together with sports car veteran Misha Goikhberg, gave it their all one last time until a no-fault accident put an early end to their chase for the podium.

WEATHERTECH RACING TO START ON THE FRONT ROW AT PETIT LE MANS

The Porsche customer team WeatherTech Racing has scored a good grid spot at the qualifying for the final event of this season’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. In the hunt for top times on the Road Atlanta circuit in the US state of Georgia, the Australian works driver Matt Campbell posted the second-fastest time at the wheel of the No. 79 car. His brand colleague Frédéric Makowiecki from France planted the No. 97 sister car on P4. In the GTD class for vehicles complying with the FIA GT3 regulations, the best Porsche 911 GT3 R tackles the so-called Petit Le Mans race over ten hours from position seven.
