Mercedes-AMG Motorsport also secured a podium finish in the third event of the DTM season at Zolder in Belgium. Maximilian Götz (GER), driving for Mercedes-AMG Team HRT, secured second place in race two of the weekend thanks to a clever pit stop strategy. In the Saturday race, Götz’s teammate Vincent Abril (MCO) had contributed the best result by finishing fourth. With a total of six top ten results at the demanding circuit, Mercedes-AMG defended its lead in the manufacturers’ standings of the series.

DOUBLE DTM TRIUMPH FOR MERCEDES-AMG MOTORSPORT AT LAUSITZRING

In the second event of the 2021 DTM, Mercedes-AMG Motorsport scores its first two wins in the still fresh season in the weekend’s two races. Philip Ellis (SUI) from Mercedes-AMG Team WINWARD secured victory in the first race at Lausitzring with a strong performance in the #57 Mercedes-AMG GT3. On Sunday, Mercedes-AMG Team HRT’s Maximilian Götz (GER) emulated this success by winning the second race.

FIRST DTM VICTORY FOR THE AUDI R8 LMS

Audi Sport customer racing made a furious start to the new DTM season with the R8 LMS. Kelvin van der Linde won at the opening weekend at Monza ahead of Nico Müller. In the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS, Dries Vanthoor/Charles Weerts remain championship leaders while Gregory Guilvert/Fabien Michal extended their lead in the GT4 European Series. The Audi RS 3 LMS completes an outstanding weekend record with victories in five championships.

MERCEDES-AMG MOTORSPORTS STARTS DTM SEASON WITH PODIUM RESULTS

Mercedes-AMG Motorsport enjoyed a successful return to the series in the DTM season opener at Monza in Italy. In the first of the two sprint races, Vincent Abril (MCO) and Maximilian Götz (GER) with the Mercedes-AMG GT3s of Mercedes-AMG Team HRT finished in second and third place and therefore secured podium results on the comeback. With third place in the Sunday race, Lucas Auer (AUT) added another podium result with the car with starting number 22 run by Mercedes-AMG Team WINWARD.

René Rast wins the second race of the Red Bull Ring

Text: René Rast hat das DTM-Sonntagsrennen auf dem Red Bull Ring in Spielberg gewonnen. In einer dramatischen Schlussphase überquerte der Mindener nach 39 Runden vor seinen Audi-Markenkollegen Mike Rockenfeller und Nico Müller die Ziellinie. Für Rast ist es der dritte Sieg im 19. DTM-Rennen. Bereits am Samstag feierten die Ingolstädter in der Steiermark einen Dreifach-Erfolg. Tragische Figur in einem abwechslungsreichen Rennen war Jamie Green. In Führung liegend fiel der Brite zwei Runden vor Schluss mit Getriebeproblemen bis auf Platz 14 zurück. In der DTM-Fahrerwertung führt vor dem großen Finale in Hockenheim weiterhin Mattias Ekström. Der Audi-Pilot wurde hinter Mercedes-AMG-Pilot Gary Paffett Fünfter. Als Sechster sah Marco Wittmann im BMW M4 DTM die Zielflagge. Jamie Green musste eine bittere Pille schlucken: Von der Pole-Position gestartet fuhr der Brite ein souveränes Rennen, führt den 16. Saisonlauf bis Runde 38 an. Mit den 25 Punkten für den Sieg hätte Green in der DTM-Fahrerwertung den Abstand auf Ekström deutlich verkürzt. Doch ein Getriebeproblem an seinem Audi RS 5 DTM verhinderte den Sieg. „Das war wirklich sehr schade. Heute war einfach nicht mein Tag“, sagte er nach dem Rennen. Platz eins erbte Markenkollege Rast, der damit in der Fahrerwertung auf Platz zwei vorrückt. „Wir haben das Rennen kontrolliert, aber das Safetycar hat alles durcheinandergewirbelt. Der Titelkampf ist jetzt offen wie nie, aber da kann noch einiges passieren. In Hockenheim wissen wir mehr“, sagte Rast. Die Safetycar-Phase war nach einer Kollision zwischen Auer und Spengler nötig geworden, als sich der Österreicher nicht schnell genug aus dem Grünstreifen befreien konnte. Nach Platz acht am Samstag blieb der Österreicher bei seinem Heimspiel diesmal ohne Punkte. Beim Restart in Runde 31 konnte die Spitze ihre Positionen behaupten, großer Verlierer...
