After making its motorsport debut in both European and British competition in 2021, Toro Verde GT is delighted to announce that it will join the Porsche Carrera Cup GB grid this season, with a four-car entry into the United Kingdom’s fastest one-make series.

The news will be further boosted with confirmation that experienced racer and engineer, Julian Westwood, will join the Rochdale-based outfit as Team Manager for its Porsche racing programme after assisting with the team’s Lamborghini racing in 2021. As a driver, he helped secure the 2015 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup Am class title, while he raced to the title with fellow Toro Verde GT Team Manager Chris Jones in the 2013 British Endurance Championship.

Competing in the GT2 European Series, Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe, and the Ginetta GT5 Challenge last time out, Toro Verde GT will remain on home soil in 2022, racing in the Ginetta GT Academy as well as the Carrera Cup GB, where several of the team’s staff helped upset the form books by helping Tio Ellinas claim the 2018 Drivers’ title.

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB begins a new era for its 20th season of competition, where it will also run its 350th race, as it introduces the latest Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, the Type-992. This upgraded machine delivers 510hp while increasing downforce, which means times are expected to fall with new lap records set in 2022.

The series once again runs in support of the ever-popular British Touring Car Championship, with an estimated trackside attendance of just under 400,000 fans across the season.

Jules Westwood, Porsche Carrera Cup GB Team Manager

“At the end of 2021 we decided that we were going to go out into the marketplace and the Carrera Cup was where we decided to set out our stall with the introduction of the new car and it being a very popular championship. Jonesy [Chris Jones] has experience from winning the championship with Tio [Ellinas] in 2018, I’ve got experience from too many years to mention with Team Parker, so between us we’ve got a good knowledge of what we need to know and need to do. We’ve ended up with four cars from zero, so it’s been an interesting time facilitating having the right people in place to have success.

“The Carrera Cup is Pro, Pro-Am and Am, so there’s a broad spectrum of the kind of drivers you can approach or can approach you. Ideally, we want to be like Team Parker, Redline, JTR where you’ve got championships under your belts and the Pros are coming to you, but similarly, we understand the marketplace. The grid is supported by the Pro-Ams and the Ams and it’s nice that a driver has a chance to win in every category.”
