The JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari team is competing in the 86th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and at the 12-hour mark they are running third in the LM GTE AM category.
As night fell in France, drivers Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.), Jeff Segal (Miami, Fla.) and Liam Griffin (Britain) were locked in a battle for the lead in the No. 84 JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari. As the driving trio began their second stints, they were running consistently in the top three as the race reached its halfway point at 3 a.m. local time. The top competition proving to be the new to the AM class mid-engine Porsches.
Segal made up substantial ground on the leading No. 77 Porsche followed by MacNeil who put in a triple stint turning over to Griffin at 3 a.m. At the races halfway point the trio are running strong in the top three.
“I had a good double stint into the early evening,” Segal said. “I was able to take some time out of the leading Porsche. The JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari is running strong. It gets pretty wild out there at night. There are a lot of P2 cars with different levels of drivers, so you have to be active in your mirrors and with your spotter.”
“I did a triple stint in the middle of the night,” MacNeil said. “It was over all uneventful but had a couple of anxious moments with some P2 cars. Other than that, my last five or six laps in the car I really didn’t have any traffic. I was able to maximize the end of the tire stint and cut some good laps before turning it over to Liam. We are running at the front at half distance, so all is well.”
Currently Griffin is back in the JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari at 3 a.m. local time in Le Mans.
