DTM WIN FOR CHRISTIAN ENGELHART AFTER TACTICAL MASTERCLASS IN OSCHERSLEBEN

A great performance and a perfect strategy – in Oschersleben, Christian Engelhart was rewarded for a faultless performance in the Porsche 911 GT3 R from Toksport WRT with his maiden DTM win. On Sunday, the experienced 36-year-old driver had started the second race of the season from seventh on the grid and moved up to second place after a perfectly timed pit stop. His brand team-mate Thomas Preining (A) from Manthey EMA had been leading up that point, but a penalty for him saw Engelhart take the lead and he crossed the finishing line in first place after 41 laps. “That victory was clearly due to the whole team. The pit stop was sensational and I had great pace before and after it. This is a fantastic win,” said the jubilant Porsche driver, who topped the rostrum for the first time in what was just his fourth DTM race. His team-mate Tim Heinemann from Fichtenberg also had reason to celebrate. As he had on Saturday, the newcomer secured second place and moved into the lead in the overall standings. Preining completed the three-way Porsche podium. Around 35,000 spectators enjoyed a top-quality DTM opener in the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben, with thrilling qualifying sessions and two new winners.

FRANCK PERERA DELIVERS FIRST LAMBORGHINI WIN IN THE HISTORY OF THE DTM

That was a show of strength. Franck Perera (F) from the SSR Performance team produced a nerveless performance to claim a dominant start-finish victory in the first DTM race of the season. The former Formula 1 test driver thereby secured the first win in the series for Lamborghini at the opening race of the 37th DTM season. On Saturday, Perera started the race at the Motorsport Arena Oschersleben in first place in the Lamborghini Huracán GT3 Evo2, controlling the field in a commanding fashion before and after the mandatory pit stop. “This win really means a lot to me. I have had some ups and downs in my career, but I knew that I still had plenty in the tank. The season still has a long way to go but I will enjoy this success and have a beer tonight,” explained the Lamborghini works driver, who is now a permanent driver in the popular race series for the first time after making a guest appearance last year. A “real” newcomer produced a sensational result, as Tim Heinemann from Fichtenberg secured second place in the Porsche 911 GT3 R for Toksport WRT. British driver Jack Aitken claimed the third spot on the podium for himself and his Emil Frey Racing team to mark his DTM debut in the Ferrari 296 GT3.

RUTRONIK AUDI TOPS THE ADAC GT MASTERS PRE-SEASON TEST IN OSCHERSLEBEN

Fast lap times, pit stop practice, and determined drivers and teams: The official ADAC GT Masters pre-season test in Oschersleben offered a taste of what spectators and fans can look forward to at the season-opener, which takes place at the same venue on 22nd April. Over the course of the six sessions, with a total duration of over eight hours, the drivers completed 3,182 laps and a distance of 11,668.394 kilometres. The test provided the drivers with their first opportunity to check out the new tyres from series partner Pirelli, which impressed in both dry and wet conditions. The teams also used the innovative fuel “Shell Blue Gasoline 98 GT Masters” for the first time. Roughly 50 percent of the components are renewable in the new fuel, which was developed by Shell exclusively for the German GT Championship. While the drivers held back a little on a damp track on Tuesday, the lap times fell consistently when the track dried out on Wednesday. The new ADAC GT Masters season gets underway from 22nd to 24th April at Motorsport Arena Oschersleben.

PORSCHE DRIVERS JAMINET/AMMERMULLER TRIUMPH IN THE ADAC GT MASTERS AT OSCHERSLEBEN

The right tyre choice was decisive: with the track drying out, defending champion Michael Ammermüller (35/Rotthalmünster) and Mathieu Jaminet (26/F, both SSR Performance) chose the right time to switch to slicks on their Porsche 911 GT3, before going on to take victory in Sunday’s race in the German GT Championship in Oschersleben. Second place went to BMW drivers Nick Yelloly (29/GB) and Jesse Krohn (30/FIN) in the M6 GT3 run by Oschersleben-based team Schubert Motorsport. Maximilian Hackländer (31/Rüthen) and Mick Wishofer (21/A, both MRS GT-Racing) came home third in another 911. “It went perfectly today,” said a victorious Ammermüller. “First the pole position, then the victory and the lead in the championship. After Saturday was not exactly ideal, we turned things around and brought the weekend to a perfect close.”

MICHAEL AMMERMULLER AND CHRISTIAN ENGLEHART ARE 2020 ADAC GT MASTERS CHAMPIONS

Ultimately, fourth place in the final round at Oschersleben was enough for Porsche drivers Michael Ammermüller (34, GER) and Christian Engelhart (33, GER, both SSR Performance) to clinch their first ever ADAC GT Masters title. The race itself was won from pole position by Philip Ellis (28, GB) and Raffaele Marciello (25, ITA, both Knaus-Team HTP-Winward) in a Mercedes-AMG GT3. Second place went to the Audi duo of Rolf Ineichen (42, CH) and Mirko Bortolotti (30, ITA, both Team WRT) ahead of Robert Renauer (35, GER) and Mathieu Jaminet (26, FRA, both Precote Herberth Motorsport) in a Porsche 911. “Winning the title is a tremendously emotional experience for me,” said newly crowned champion Christian Engelhart. “I wept tears of joy when Michael crossed the finish line, because I’ve always dreamed of winning the ADAC GT Masters. It’s unbelievable that we’ve actually done it.”

ADAC GT MASTERS TITLE CHASE HOTS UP AT OSCHERLEBEN WITH WIN FOR AMMERMULLER/ ENGELHART

With a Pole position, a lights-to-flag victory and a fastest race lap Michael Ammermüller (34, GER) and Christian Engelhart (33, GER, both SSR Performance) underscored their title aspirations in the ADAC GT Masters – a dominant performance in the penultimate race of the season at Oschersleben. Win number three of the season for the Porsche duo was enough to take them to the top of the Super Sports Car League standings ahead of Sunday’s final round. Luca Stolz (25, GER) and Maro Engel (35, Monte Carlo, both Toksport WRT) in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 secured the runner-up spot to keep their own title ambitions alive. P3 went to Philip Ellis (28, GB) and Raffaele Marciello (25, ITA, both Knaus-Team HTP-Winward) also in a Mercedes-AMG. Three more contestants – defending champions Patric Niederhauser (29, CH) and Kelvin van der Linde (24, ZA) in a Rutronik Racing Audi and Porsche driver Robert Renauer (35, GER, Precote Herberth Motorsport) – are also still in with a chance of lifting the 2020 championship trophy on Sunday (live on SPORT1 from 13:00 CET onwards). Just twelve points separate the title rivals. “We managed to have a perfect race today,” said delighted race winner Ammermüller. “Our Porsche ran just great this Saturday. We can go into tomorrow’s race with confidence thanks to our performance today.”
