Josh Webster (Team Parker Racing) secured the final pole position of the 2019 Porsche Carrera Cup GB season at Brands Hatch, the 2014 champion and former Porsche GB Scholar ended Saturday’s session ahead of Lewis Plato (Motorbase Performance). Wet conditions made the 2.4-mile Brands Hatch Grand Prix circuit incredibly challenging, some drivers sliding off the track leading to three red flag periods during the 30 minute session. Webster set his best time early into the session, Plato came to within 0.140secs of it in the latter stages while 2018 Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion Tio Ellinas (Redline Racing) recorded a time good enough for third on the grid – Ellinas will start alongside Dan Vaughan (Motorbase Performance) on the second row.
Several drivers further down the timing sheet were caught out by red flag stoppages during the session, amongst them newly crowned 2019 Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion and 2018 / 2019 Junior Dan Harper (JTR) who will fight back in tomorrow’s race from the fourth row on the grid. In the close battle for Pro-Am category championship honours, points leader Karl Leonard (Team Parker Racing) posted a time just 0.286 quicker than title rival Jack McCarthy (Redline Racing) – 15 points now separate the pair. In the Am category Adam Knight (JTR) qualified ahead of Peter Kyle-Henney (IN2 Racing) and 2019 champion Justin Sherwood (Team Parker Racing) – a slim margin of just 0.038secs separating Kyle-Henney and Sherwood underlining the close nature of the category.
Following the 2019 Carrera Cup GB race format, Webster has already earned two championship points with his pole position, and the top qualifiers in their respective categories – Leonard and Knight – also receive two points each, Leonard’s haul moving him closer to securing the Pro-Am category title. The grid for tomorrow’s second race will be decided immediately following race one. The overall winner will draw a number between four and six at random, deciding whether the first four, five or six competitors will have their grid positions reversed. The remaining drivers will form the grid for race two according to their finishing positions in race one, any driver who records a DNF in race one will start race two behind the last finisher in their category.
Round fifteen will take place at 10:40 tomorrow, Sunday 13 October, round sixteen will take place at 16:05. Both races feature a standing start and are scheduled to last for a duration of 17 laps. With Pro-Am, Rookie and Team championships set to be resolved and wet weather forecast, tomorrow’s races look set to deliver excitement and drama.
