Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Matt Campbell (Australia) are ready for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship WeatherTech 240 to run at Watkins Glen International Raceway, July 1-2.

IMSA took the decision to replace the Canadian Tire Motorsports Park race with back-to-back weekends at The Glen. This time it will be a traditional two-hour-and-forty-minute race.

The Proton Competition crew did not have time to go fishing in Seneca Lake, instead they were busy repairing the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Porsche 911 RSR from fire damage that occurred on the second lap of Sunday’s Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen. The team will have the car ready for the 2:20 p.m. practice session on Thursday morning.

After exiting the burning WeatherTech Porsche MacNeil is ready to return to competition as well.

“For a race driver there is nothing scarier than fire in a race car,” MacNeil said. “I had perfect contact with the crew and when I pulled onto pit lane, they told me to GET OUT! They spent the week fixing the car and it will be as strong or stronger when we hit the track Thursday afternoon.

“The sprint format will be interesting this Friday. There will be just three GTLM cars and a few less entries across the board. I am looking for a fast-paced race with possibly no cautions over the race distance.”

Campbell still has only tested at 3.4-mile, 11-turn road course. He is looking forward to getting a result on Friday.

“Really looking forward to this weekend as last weekend didn’t go to plan,” Campbell said. “Now we have another opportunity to try and get a good result at The Glen on Friday. There was quite a bit of damage after the fire. The team has assessed the damage and know what to do to repair the WeatherTech Porsche for Friday’s race. They will have it ready to go by Thursday afternoon’s practice. It is an opportunity to come back and get a result after a tough weekend.”
