WeatherTech Racing drivers Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Toni Vilander (Kankaanpää, Finland) will start the IMSA WeatherTech Championship Michelin GT Challenge at Virginia International Raceway (VIR) from seventh in GTD.
MacNeil had the wheel of the No. 63 WeatherTech Racing Ferrari 488 Evo for the 15-minute qualifying session this afternoon at the 3.27-mile, 17-turn rolling terrain road course. The teams had very little practice time as rain covered the area most of the afternoon. The Scuderia Corsa run team only did one lap in the noon practice session. With few laps under his belt this morning MacNeil was able to post a lap of 1:45.565 that will have he and Vilander starting from the fourth row for tomorrow’s two-hour and 40-minute race.
“We unloaded with a pretty good WeatherTech Racing Ferrari,” MacNeil said. “We were able to get a couple of laps in the dry in the morning and then the skies opened up and it was just too dangerous to turn any laps in the noon session. I was able to set a pretty good lap time in qualifying. The car was good just .3-seconds off of the pole. That shows just how competitive this GTD field is this weekend. It is going to be one hell-of-a-race tomorrow.”
