Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.), Matt Campbell (Australia), and Mathieu Jaminet’s (France) IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Sahlen’s Six Hours of The Glen came to an early end just three laps into the race today.

MacNeil took the start in the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Porsche 911 RSR for the six- hour race. On the second lap he was pursuing the BMWs when he entered Turn 11 and the car understeered into the wall at the exit. The impact caused damage which led to a fire. He made another complete lap as the severity of the fire increased. He pulled into pit lane and made a quick exit as the Watkins Glen fire crew did an excellent job to extinguish the flames quickly. MacNeil exited the car, was checked at the Ernie Thurston Medical Center and released.

“It’s a shame,” MacNeil said. “The Proton Competition crew worked hard on the WeatherTech Porsche all weekend. We had a pretty loose car all through practice. At the start the car felt good. I was catching the BMWs. I exited the last corner and got into the wall and something broke in the rear and that’s when the fire started. Big apologies to the team, it is 100 percent my fault. They are going to work hard to rebuild the car for the WeatherTech 240 on Friday.”

MacNeil will partner with Matt Campbell for Friday’s running of the WeatherTech 240 at The Glen.
