PORSCHE CARRERA CUP GB 2020 SEASON ANNOUNCED
0

The fastest single marque GT racing championship in the UK, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB, will reinforce its position in the fabric of national motorsport in 2020 with a high profile calendar, generous prize fund and a continued commitment to providing GT racing drivers with the best showcase for their skills – whether racing as a professional or for pleasure.

The Porsche Carrera Cup GB will enter next season sitting at the top of a refreshed domestic version of the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid, underpinned by the introduction of new, feeder race series – Porsche Classic Boxster Cup and Porsche Sprint Challenge GB – to the country‘s racing portfolio.

In line with its status, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB again will join the prestigious British Touring Car Championship calendar over a series of eight race weekends televised live on ITV4. Drivers and teams will be competing for an unchanged prize fund, including an award of £40,000 to the overall champion – one of UK motorsport’s single largest prizes.

At the core of the Porsche commitment to customer motorsport and race driver development for over 20 years, the Porsche Motorsport Pyramid has an unrivalled record in nurturing track talent and assisting generations of drivers to progress through the Porsche ranks to the highest levels of international GT motorsport.

With the aim to develop further the proven role of the Carrera Cup network in helping young racers follow in the footsteps of Porsche factory drivers such as Le Mans winners Nick Tandy and Timo Bernhard, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB will introduce a Young Driver Development Programme for 2020.

Porsche Carrera Cup GB Young Driver Development Programme 2020

An evolution of the Rookie category, and drawing on key elements of the successful Porsche GB Junior Programme, eligible drivers will compete for a generous £55,000 prize fund. In addition, an exclusive wristwatch will be on offer for the driver accumulating the highest number of fastest laps.

Drivers eligible for the Young Driver Development Programme will need to be under 25 years of age on 1 March 2020, and to have competed in any Carrera Cup for no more than two rounds. As is the case with the Rookie category in its current guise, drivers can be from any of the three core categories: Pro, Pro-Am or Am.

A successful cooperation between Porsche and Michelin, that has brought world-class success on track and on road for more than 50 years, is reflected by the supply of 12 control slick Michelin tyres as part of participation in the full-season Young Driver Development Programme. In addition, Michelin will provide Young Driver Development Programme drivers with technical training on one of the most important components in a one-make championship, their tyres.

Drawing on their experience of helping develop Porsche GB Junior drivers – the last two of whom have won the championship – the Porsche Carrera Cup GB technical team will offer Young Driver Development Programme members data support for insights into their driving performance and the key dynamics of their 911 GT3 Cup.

Completing the package of on-track support will be a programme at the Porsche Human Performance Centre. The expert team in the state-of-the-art Silverstone facility provide guidance and training in all aspects of physical preparation, from diet, to training, to reaction times. A media training session will assist Young Driver Development Programme drivers with their off-track performance, while bespoke team kit will mark them out in the paddock.

Calendar

For its 18th season, Porsche Carrera Cup GB will maintain the successful format established in 2018 and refined for 2019 following a programme of feedback and collaboration with teams, drivers and sponsors.

The championship remains a firm fixture on the ToCA package, which has provided a home for the championship since its inception in 2003. In addition, all other prize initiatives will continue. Winners of the Pro, Pro-Am and Am categories will be offered the use of a Porsche 911 road car for a year, while the Team champions will receive a Porsche Cayenne for 12 months coupled with a season-long loan of a Porsche Cayenne for teams fielding two cars or more.

Following a collaborative assessment of options for 2020, one key benefit identified from the 2019 season was a growth in national television coverage achieved by ITV4. In order to maximise the opportunity presented to teams, drivers and sponsors by this increase in television coverage, Porsche Carrera Cup GB will race exclusively on ToCA weekends in 2020. The provisional calendar is:

Rounds 1 and 2 – Donington Park (Nat.) – ToCA – 28–29 March
Rounds 3 and 4 – Brands Hatch (Indy) – ToCA – 11–12 April
Rounds 5 and 6 – Thruxton – ToCA – 16–17 May

Rounds 13 and 14 – Silverstone (International) – ToCA – 26–27 September
