Performance Tech Motorsports is adding a few familiar faces to its IMSA Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda lineup for Round 4 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Performance Tech drivers are taking advantage of the new endurance format of the Prototype Challenge series by adding a second driver to three of the cars in the lineup. With the new one hour and 45-minute format car entries may include up to, two drivers but are not required to run two drivers.
As announced in May Kyle Masson, driver of the No. 38 Centinel Spine/Restitute Health Prototype, will join his father Dr. Robert Masson, Windermere, in the No. 11 Mazda Prototype Challenge. Robert Masson currently leads the MPC championship after racing the first three rounds as a single driver entry. He welcomes Kyle Masson to the No. 11 for the fun of competition.
The driver of the No. 75 Ligier JS P3 Cameron Cassels has competed in the LMP3 Masters class as a single driver entry. This weekend he brings Trent Hindman on board to continue his fight for the podium. Cassels and Hindman competed in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge series last year and finished second in the Grand Sport championship. CTMP is not Cassels home track, but it is his homeland as he hails from British Columbia.
The Charles Wicht Racing/Performance Tech Motorsports entry of Leo Lamelas has featured various second drivers throughout the season. This weekend Lamelas will share his No. 7 Ligier JS P3 with Roman de Angelis. Lamelas has taken home two podium finishes, and one win this season with Patricio O’Ward at Sebring International Raceway. He currently sits second in the LMP3 points championship.
Performance Tech rounds out the weekend with Stephen Dawes, Sidney, New York, and Howard Jacobs, Ft. Lauderdale, in the MPC class. The two will continue on as single driver entries. Dawes runs the No. 22 AIG Technologies MPC and Jacobs runs the No. 77 CardioAccess MPC. Dawes rejoins the competition after an on-track incident cut his run short at Barber Motorsports Park. Jacobs finished seventh in MPC at Barber without issue, but he will be handed an extra challenge this weekend. Jacobs is hopping back into his No. 77 just one day after returning from travel in Europe.
Team Principal Brent O’Neill has his sights set on podium finishes in three classes Saturday, July 7, in the IMSA Prototype Challenge Presented by Mazda series.
“We’ve got some great pairings going into this weekend,” O’Neill said. “I think everybody is excited to get back on track. It adds some performance pressure having two drivers sharing a car because you want to hand it over in a good position and in good shape. But it’s also really exciting because they’re all great drivers and should be strong competitors.
“For Kyle and Robert, it’s all about having fun competing together. Cameron and Trent almost won a championship together. Leo and Roman will be great; I think they’ll be out front. Roman is a fast kid. For Stephen and Howard it has always been about fun so hopefully, we get a clean weekend for both of them to enjoy and really race.”
Performance Tech Motorsports unleashes its five machines on Canadian Tire Motorsport Park this week Friday, July 6, through Sunday, July 8. IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship and the No. 38 are set to headline the weekend. Race day for both series is Sunday, July 8, with the IMSA Prototype Challenge series kicking the day off at 10:30 a.m. ET then at 2:05 p.m. the green flag flies for the start of the Mobil 1 SportsCar Grand Prix.
