As 2018 draws to a close, SRO Motorsports Group continues to finalise plans for an exciting 2019 racing season that will see events staged on five continents.
This process took a step forward last week, when the dates for two major international races were officially confirmed during the FIA World Motor Sport Council meeting in Saint Petersburg, Russia (5 December).
Led by FIA President Jean Todt, the council announced that the FIA GT World Cup will continue to form part of the Macau Grand Prix weekend in 2019. The marquee international event for GT competitors will take place at the Guia Circuit from 14-17 November, subject to track homologation and promoter agreement. As such, it will retain the same spot on the calendar that it occupied this year.
2019 will represent the fifth running of the FIA GT World Cup as part of the iconic Macau weekend. This year’s contest was won by the BMW M6 GT3 of Augusto Farfus, who secured the Bavarian marque its first GT win on the uniquely demanding Macau streets.
Further to this, it was confirmed that a class for Silver-graded drivers will be added to next year’s FIA GT World Cup, significantly bolstering the pool of racing talent eligible to enter the end-of-year event.
During the St. Petersburg meeting, the World Motor Sport Council also firmed up the dates and venue for next year’s FIA GT Nations Cup.
Promoted by SRO Motorsports Group, the Pro-Am event recently enjoyed a successful maiden running at the Bahrain International Circuit (30 November/1 December) where a thrilling main race saw Turkey crowned worthy champions. In particular, competitors departed Bahrain with positive feedback regarding the nation-versus-nation concept and the extensive track time on offer.
Discussing the event’s future, SRO Motorsports Group founder and CEO Stephane Ratel proposed Vallelunga as the next venue, as part of the intended rotation between host continents. This was officially ratified by the FIA World Motor Sport Council, ensuring that the FIA GT Nations Cup will travel to Italy next year. The 2019 dates were also confirmed as 1-3 November, placing it two weeks ahead of the FIA GT World Cup.
These international contests will fall towards the end of the 2019 season, joining an already impressive SRO Motorsports Group calendar for the year ahead.
