Dragon Racing has signed Formula 2 driver Maximilian Günther as its official test and reserve driver.

The 20-year-old German took part in the recent Rookie Test in Marrakesh, impressing the Jay Penske-led operation.

Günther, who will race for Arden in F2 this year, is likely to be part of Dragon’s Season Five development testing, which is scheduled to begin at the first FIA-organized manufacturer test at Monteblanco, Spain later this month.

“I’m really looking forward to working with Dragon in Formula E,” Günther said. “Jay Penske has built a fantastic team.

“In the rookie tests in Marrakech, I was given a great reception by the entire crew and made to feel at home right from the start.

“I was very impressed by the professionalism they bring to the job, and I now want to play my part in ensuring that the team continues to be successful in the future.”

Speaking about Günther’s performance at the Marrakesh test, Dragon’s Nigel Beresford praised his attitude in adapting to the ABB FIA Formula E Championship.

“These cars are not like anything else and the way he settled in to it so quickly was impressive,” Beresford told e-racing365.

“To understand and get a feeling for the brakes and the mechanical feeling of the car immediately is very impressive.

“What I liked about him was his professionalism for such a young a relatively inexperienced guy. He was inquisitive and understanding of a lot around a Formula E.

“It is clear he is a driver with a massive amount of potential to make an excellent career.”

Jerome d’Ambrosio has been with the American team since the inception of its Formula E program, with Mike Conway, Oriol Servia, Loic Duval, Neel Jani and current incumbent Jose-Maria Lopez among his teammates since 2014.
