Mercedes-AMG Motorsport is heading into the fifth and final race of the season in the Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli (IGTC) as the leader in the drivers’ and manufacturers’ standings. This year’s season finale of the series (21-23 November) is held at the Kyalami Grand Prix Circuit for the first time. The track in South Africa is to become the venue for a crowning season end for Mercedes-AMG: the performance and sports car brand from Affalterbach having won the drivers’ championship and having become runner-up in the final manufacturers’ standings last year, the double with both titles is the goal this time. In total, seven Mercedes-AMG GT3 will be racing at the 4.522 kilometres long track, three of which with extended works support.
Porsche Carrera Cup GB, the fastest single marque GT racing championship in the UK, travels to Kent for a no-holds-barred season finale with the 2014, 2018 and 2019 champions as part of a bolstered grid of over 20 cars. While the Pro and Am category titles may have been decided, fierce battles still rage in the Pro-Am, Rookie and Team categories.
There was only one way that Orange1 FFF Racing could snatch the Endurance Cup title on Sunday afternoon: they had to win. With a 24-point deficit to the leading SMP Ferrari crew, they also needed Miguel Molina, Mikhail Aleshin and Davide Rigon to finish no higher than 10th at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. FFF drivers Andrea Caldarelli and Marco Mapelli knew that this was a long shot.

They came, they saw, they conquered. Following the title win by Patric Niederhauser (27, CH) and Kelvin van der Linde (23, ZA, both HCB-Rutronik Racing) in the drivers’ classification earlier, HCB-Rutronik Racing also clinched victory in Sunday’s race at the Sachsenring and with it, the team championship title. As a result, the outfit from Germany’s south-west achieved the double to round off their first season in the Super Sports Car League. “What an amazing season,” said Team Principal, Fabian Plentz. “The team really deserve this title. They’ve worked incredibly hard to achieve success.”

Although the outcome of the ADAC GT Masters drivers’ championship had already been decided at the Hockenheimring, there was still plenty at stake on the last weekend of the season at the Sachsenring. 25,000 spectators came through the gates to witness a racing spectacular in which several contenders would be battling it out for the team title. Despite the customary heroic endeavours of the entire crew and the two driver pairings Mirko Bortolotti and Christian Engelhart, Franck Perera and Rolf Ineichen, Orange1 by GRT Grasser fell agonisingly short of winning the team championship. Meanwhile, in the drivers’ classification, Bortolotti and Engelhart clinched the runner-up spot after two intense and thrilling races. Perera and Ineichen finished the campaign in tenth place. The duo of Michele Beretta and Marco Mapelli, who were not present this weekend, took P18 in the drivers’ championship.

It could hardly have been a more clear-cut outcome. Newly crowned champions Patric Niederhauser (27, CH) and Kelvin van der Linde (23, ZA) have now secured the ADAC GT Masters team championship for series newcomers HCB-Rutronik Racing with a comfortable win on the last Sunday of the 2019 campaign. Jimmy Eriksson (28, SWE) and Daniel Keilwitz (30, GER, both Team Zakspeed BKK Mobil Oil Racing) in a Mercedes-AMG GT3 were second. Third place went to Max Hofer (20, AUT) and Christopher Mies (30, GER, both Montaplast by Land-Motorsport) in another Audi R8 LMS. P3 overall was enough for Hofer to clinch the Pirelli Junior classification for young drivers. “It’s great to finish the season with a victory,” said Kelvin van der Linde. “The team title is a well-deserved reward for the whole team. Their commitment is reflected in the great successes we have had on the track.”
