Tiago Monteiro is preparing to face what is probably the most difficult race on the FIA World Touring Car Championship, WTCC, calendar on May 26 and 27 when the series visits Nordschleife, commonly known as “Green Hell”. The German circuit is considered to be one of the most challenging tracks in the world, a former Formula 1 venue.
In 2016, Tiago was one of the major protagonists of the event until a spectacular accident ruined all his efforts on his way to win. A year later, the Honda driver is back as the championship leader and eager to take his revenge on the legendary circuit.
The start of the FIA WTCC season in 2017 has been marked by the strong performances of Tiago and Honda, who together have climbed onto the podium at each meeting with several victories. The Portuguese driver and the Japanese manufacturer’s record this year is remarkable and they intend to continue the rest of the championship with the same successful dynamic. “It’s been a fantastic year so far,” said Tiago, “Honda’s developments on the Civic over the winter have borne fruit in every aspect and on every circuit. This weekend, the battle will be even greater on what is a very long track with many fast and blind corners and long straights. We need a very good car to face all these challenges.”
As for delivering a prediction, Tiago knows only too well the peculiarities of the Nordschleife and what’s needed for success there to draw any foregone conclusions. “The circuit is so special that I do not know what to expect. This is the most difficult and incredible track I know. It represents a huge challenge for any driver. My accident here last year will not affect my concentration or my performance this weekend. Get what you can! But I know that the result can only be better than last year’s. And if, in addition, it allows us to keep the lead of the championship, the bet will be won.”
