Retro is in. This is proved by the Touring Cars Classics. Already at the Norisring the series for historic racing cars was a hit in the supporting program of the DTM. For the 90th birthday of the Nürburgring, the legendary DTM vehicles of the 80s and 90s once again show a tryst.
Oldies but Goldies is also especially for the exquisite starter field. Next weekend some of the big riders from the game will be there. With names such as Volker Strycek, Christian Danner, Altfridheger or Roland Asch, there is more than just a touch of nostalgia in the air. Toto Wolff, Motorsportchef from Mercedes, and Dr. Jens Thiemer, Head of Marketing and Communications at Mercedes-Benz, will be taking part in the race on Saturday. However, a name is particularly prominent in the participant list. Klaus Ludwig. The three-time DTM champion, who won 14 times at the Nürburgring, is celebrating a debut in the series with a 190 Mercedes Class 1.
“King Ludwig” burns very much on his mission in the time-honored racing car. For him, however, participation clearly precedes sporting ambitions. “The Alfa from Stefan Rupp is incredibly fast and the Mercedess of Jörg Hatscher and Thorsten Stadler are like the fire brigade. You do not see anyway. If it rains, we may have a chance. I do not know yet which tires we drive, Michelin or Dunlop, it also depends a lot. You have to deal with such a car awesomely. Everything is no longer available in large quantities. There are no engines or crankshafts for the 190s. That’s why you have to try to get things done with as little speed as possible, “says the native of Bonn.
Anyone who would like to experience the timers and active drivers of the “old” DTM first-hand experience also has an opportunity. On Saturday, the stars of the show stage from 16:10 to 16:30 clock give an autograph hour. The race of the Touring Car Classics will take place on Saturday from 17:30 to 18:10 hours over the distance of 40 minutes and includes a two-minute compulsory box stop to enable a driver change. After a free practice on Friday (13:25 clock), two qualifying sessions (Friday, 6:25 pm and Saturday 8:20 pm) of 20 minutes each decide on the starting positions.
