Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.), Laurens Vanthoor (Belgium), and Earl Bamber (New Zealand) are out of the 24 hours of Le Mans.
After 138 laps and running in sixth on the lead lap in LM GTE PRO MacNeil went off in the Ford Chicane hitting the outside wall just before pit road and ending the race for the trio. He was able to limp the No. 79 WeatherTech Racing Porsche 911 RSR back to pit lane, but the Proton Competition crew diagnosed a bent chassis and had to retire the car just before 03:00 CET.
“Pretty much a solo racing incident,” MacNeil said. “I was pushing and got into the Ford Chicane a little too hot and ended up in the wall with a very hard hit. The good news is we had a great car all race. The WeatherTech Racing Porsche RSR was running strong and things were going according to plan. I am gutted for the team after all of their hard work. I want to thank Laurens and Earl; I am disappointed we didn’t make it to the checker.”
Next up for MacNeil is the IMSA WeatherTech Championship race at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, September 10-12.
