United Autosports are preparing for round three of the FIA World Endurance Championship at Monza this weekend (16-18 July).
Phil Hanson will once again be joined by Filipe Albuquerque and Fabio Scherer in the #22 Oreca 07 after both drivers were unable to race at Portimao last month.
The team are currently lying second in the LMP2 championship after winning the opening round at Spa and finishing third at Portimao. The Monza round is the final WEC round ahead of the prestigious Le Mans 24 Hours in August.
Last week, the ACO confirmed the cancellation of the Fuji round, with a double header at Bahrain scheduled for the final two rounds of the World Championship. This weekend will mark the first time fans are allowed to attend a WEC race since the COTA race in January 2019.
The six-hour race will begin at 12:00 on Sunday 18th July.
Phil Hanson
“We are heading back to Monza after the ELMS race weekend where we finished second and had a very strong car in the race. I’m looking forward to hopefully repeating the success. It should be an exciting six hours of Monza.”
Filipe Albuquerque
“I’m excited to go back to Monza. I have a great connection with Italy. Monza is a traditional track, which I have great memories at when we clinched the title in ELMS with a pole position and the win. It’s great to be back with United Autosports since missing the Portimao round. We won the first WEC race at Spa and we have a good car and a good team and we all want to get another win. Of course, we always resect the competition as they are very strong but we are looking forward to the next race.”
Fabio Scherer
“I’ve only raced at Monza once before but I’m really looking forward to this weekend. I love Italy. I love the food and the atmosphere. And Monza is a track with a lot of motorsport history. I think Monza is a good preparation for the 24 Hours of Le Mans too, if you consider the characteristics of the circuit with the long straights and the chicanes. It will be good preparation.”
Zak Brown
“I’m looking forward to seeing how the WEC team get on in Monza, especially coming off the back of a second place at the ELMS race last weekend. We are lying second in the championship so the aim is more points to retake the lead.”
Richard Dean
“Our aim this weekend is to build championship points before the next race at Le Mans, where double points are available. We were strong at Monza in the ELMS race so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be for WEC too. It will be good to have Filipe and Fabio back alongside Phil too.”
