After a decade away, the most successful driver in Porsche Carrera Cup GB history, 1992 British Touring Car champion Tim Harvey, will make his return to Porsche one-make racing. Harvey will join the Porsche Visit Cayman Islands Sprint Challenge GB grid as a guest driver for rounds 9 and 10 at Thruxton alongside the British Touring Car Championship over the weekend of 28 and 29 August.
Exactly a decade after his last Porsche race, the experienced Porsche racer will make his Porsche Visit Cayman Islands Sprint Challenge GB championship debut racing in the Pro category with Team Parker Racing – one of the most successful teams in Porsche GB Motorsport history. The 2008 and 2010 Porsche Carrera Cup GB champion last raced in the championship in 2011, but Harvey still holds the record for the highest number of race wins (36) and highest number of overall podium finishes (108) in the 19-year history of the championship.
Since retiring from Porsche Carrera Cup GB – the fastest single marque GT racing championship in the UK – Harvey has enjoyed a successful career in television motorsport commentary, most notably providing invaluable insights into the BTCC and Porsche Carrera Cup GB races for ITV.
Swapping the commentary box for the cockpit, over an action-packed weekend at Thruxton – the UK’s fastest circuit – Harvey will complete two practice sessions, qualifying and two races, fulfilling a long-held dream to return to Porsche one-make racing. Though ineligible to score championship points, Harvey will give no quarter to his Porsche Visit Cayman Islands Sprint Challenge GB rivals – a mix of exciting newcomers and experienced racers competing in two categories for amateur and professional drivers.
Tim Harvey: “I’m 60 years old in three months and a proud Grandfather nowadays, but I’m as excited as a teenager looking forward to their first race! I can’t thank Porsche enough for this opportunity as I’ve wanted to race in Sprint Challenge GB since it was first announced and I tried the car briefly at the Silverstone taster day in 2019.
“I may only have raced historic cars for the last few years, but I spend many days behind the wheel of a Porsche either on trackdays or driving my own cars, so my passion for driving and Porsche in particular is immense. Hopefully old age and experience and a love for the Thruxton circuit will see me competitive over the weekend and I can’t wait to sit in the car for testing on Friday!”
