Eddie Cheever and Chris Froggatt of Sky Tempesta Racing became GT World Challenge Sprint Cup Drivers’ Champions this weekend in the Pro-Am category, having shown impressive resilience to win Race 2 at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya.
Leading up to the weekend their championship victory looked almost certain, with the team dominating past Sprint Races in their class. However, in Saturday’s opening race Froggatt suffered a spin that left the #93 car in the gravel, and meant the team was only able to achieve a fourth-place finish. Matters were worsened by close rivals snatching the race win and threatening the championship lead.
Things appeared to go from bad to worse in Race 2, when Cheever was nudged into a spin on the opening lap and plummeted into last place. But he fought back valiantly, clawing back up through the field with impressive overtakes and, when Froggatt took the wheel, they were right in the mix for a podium. Froggatt was able to pass both cars ahead of him in the closing laps of the race, and bring home victory for the Sky Tempesta Racing team. This was their eighth Sprint Cup Race win this season, having won all but one.
The Race 2 victory in Barcelona secured the Sprint Cup title for the #93 pairing, who have dominated the season. They top the standings with 131 points, 13.5 points ahead of their nearest rivals, whilst the Sky Tempesta Racing team sit on top in the Sprint Cup Pro-Am Team’s table with 141 points.
On their momentous championship win, Eddie Cheever said: “We are extremely proud to have won the Pro-Am Sprint title.
