Meyer Shank Racing’s (MSR) Tom Blomqvist captured his second-consecutive IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship pole in two weeks, turning in a record qualifying lap in Saturday’s qualifying at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Blomqvist turned his best lap of 1:04.394-seconds in the No. 60 MSR Acura ARX-05 DPi, edging the fellow Acura DPi by 0.068-seconds. Teammate, Oliver Jarvis – who held the previous Canadian Tire Motorsport Park track record – will join Blomqvist in Sunday’s two hour, 40-minute event.
Winning the pole also gives MSR three extra points, cutting the championship lead to just 14 points.
While several competitors took to the track at the start of the 15-minute session, MSR bided its time, turning Blomqvist loose midway through the session. Blomqvist moved up to second on his second lap at speed, and then put in a “very, very brave” lap to take the pole with 4:15 remaining.
“Wow, I gave it absolutely everything I had out there,” said Blomqvist with a smile on his face. “I wasn’t sure I was going to survive the session and there were definitely a few hairy moments out there. I had to just close my eyes and be very, very brave. Our Acura has been really fast especially in the last sector. The entire team has given us a really fast package and it’s showing with our results. We’ve made such great improvements from the start of the season, so we’re really getting into a nice groove. We’ll have to make a few adjustments for the race tomorrow, but I know we have a fast racecar.”
