Hong Kong racing driver Jonathan Hui (HKG) has confirmed a full-season entry in the Fanatec GT World Challenge Europe Powered by AWS (GTWC Europe) Endurance Cup for his fifth consecutive season in the highly competitive European championship. The 2021 GTWC Europe Endurance Cup Pro-Am champion is looking to get back to the top of the championship standings, teaming up with Chris Froggatt (GBR) and Eddie Cheever III (ITA) for his 2023 season assault. The team will be competing for Bronze category honours in the brand new #93 Sky Tempesta Racing McLaren 720S GT3 Evo, aiming to maximise points at each of the 5 rounds of this year’s race calendar.
Hui has displayed great commitment towards his racing campaign at the top level of GT racing, continuing to compete in Europe despite stringent travel restrictions during the pandemic over the last 3 years. He has achieved stellar results with the British team, clinching the coveted Endurance Cup Pro-Am Team’s championship in 2020 and Driver’s championship in 2021 respectively. Additionally, this announcement follows a splendid run of finishes by Hui – with a P2 in class at the 2023 Bathurst 12 Hour and a class podium at the 2022 Gulf 12 Hours, which was achieved in the Sky Tempesta McLaren on its maiden outing.
The Hong Kong ace is positively confident to unleash his 2023 season alongside a proven line-up in Froggatt and Cheever, who have worked excellently together for several years now. Additionally, the team is encouraged by the pace and consistency shown in the new 4.0-litre twin turbo V8 McLaren 720S GT3 Evo, which is set to be pushed to the maximum with the help of the technical expertise imparted by Garage 59.
Hui has taken up several test days in Europe to familiarize himself with the new car and is hoping to improve upon his results from the challenging 2022 GTWC Europe season. He is feeling positive about his pace and is training hard mentally and physically to repeat his championship success from a couple of years ago. This year, the team will be competing in the Bronze Cup category, which is equivalent to last year’s Gold Cup, but has been renamed by SRO to reflect FIA’s global driver ratings system overhaul.
The championship will see the instantly recognizable Sky-liveried #93 McLaren take to the track at iconic racing locations across Europe. The season kicks off in Monza later this month, followed by Paul Ricard 1000 km and the 24 Hours of Spa where more than 70 entries have been confirmed. The final two rounds will be held at the Nürburgring and Barcelona circuits respectively, making it an extremely exciting racing schedule.
