The JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari team is competing in the 86th running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and at the 18-hour mark they are running eighth in the LM GTE AM category.
As drivers Cooper MacNeil (Hinsdale, Ill.), Jeff Segal (Miami, Fla.) and Liam Griffin (Britain) were beginning their third stints into night they were locked in a battle for a podium spot in the No. 84 JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari. In the early hours of the morning, just before 7 a.m. Segal was making up ground and running strongly in third, when he went to the brakes on the black and white Ferrari into Mulsanne Corner, locked up the Michelin tires and went into the gravel trap. The result sent the team down the order to seventh, three laps down.
Griffin took over and drove through the morning, putting in strong laps focused on making up positions with six hours to go in the race. The Brit handed the controls of the JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari to MacNeil at 10 a.m.
“I went into Mulsanne Corner and locked up the brakes,” Segal said. “It was a stupid mistake on my part. I was pushing really hard toward the end of the stint. I was fighting with the cars ahead for the podium. I was pushing, went off in the gravel and got stuck. No one to blame but myself. Pushing too hard. Sorry to my teammates and the team. We will keep driving to the finish.”
“It was frustrating out there this morning, there was a lot of street sweeping and yellow flags,” Griffin said. “I spent the better part of an hour without doing a flying lap. It is a frustrating way to finish my time a Le Mans this year. I did my fastest lap this morning in the car, so I am pleased with that effort. We were running great up into the night. The potential was there, but still some time to go.”
Currently MacNeil is in the JMW/WeatherTech Ferrari at 10:30 a.m. local time in Le Mans and running in P8 in class.
