A great start to the 2021 Thailand Super Series season with double podiums in both Super Car GT3 races for the B-Quik Absolute Racing Audi R8 GT3 EVOs, the No 1 shared by Sandy Stuvik and Philip Massoud and the No 26 with Daniel Bilski and Martin Rump, a performance capped off by a sensational race victory for the latter car this afternoon.
This was the first time on track for our GT3 car roster in nearly a year and the team spent the first couple of days in the North East getting back into the groove.
Yesterday’s Race 1 was a mixed bag but a pretty tough afternoon eventually brought us a double podium finish, P3 and P4, as well as the Teams’ trophy so we quickly cast our eyes towards today’s Race 2.
And what a Sunday afternoon at a hot and dry Chang International Circuit it turned out to be. From pole position Martin would have to contend with two time Le Mans 24 Hour winner Earl Bamber, one of the best sportscar drivers in the world, as he would start alongside on the front row!
From the green lights Martin grabbed hold of the race lead, heading the GT3 pack over the opening laps and fending off Earl’s Porsche which was tucked up behind.
At half distance Martin handed over to Daniel with track position advantage and the Australian put in one of the stints of his career to manage that 3 second cushion. In fact, he steadily extended the gap to over 11 seconds by the time the chequered flag fell as he soaked up pressure from behind.
A tough race however for the No 1 car which was dropped a position on the grid and made slower progress with overtaking difficult this afternoon. A late race spin cost a chunk of time but Sandy and Philip dug in, never gave up and P5 and the final podium step salvaged something positive.
That fifth place, combined with the victory for the No 26 car, gave us enough points to clinch the Teams’ trophy for a second consecutive day and allowed us to leave Buriram at the top of the Teams’ standings.
Meanwhile, in Super Car GTM it proved a pretty productive weekend for Autowerks B-Quik, which entered Henk Kiks and Frank Teeuwen in the No 27 Porsche 991 GT3 Cup while Warren Adulayavichitr and Shaun Walker teamed up in the sister No 66 car. Both crews were focused on getting up to speed and points and podiums, both overall and in the Porsche Sprint Cup, was a just reward to all the effort.
Now we turn our attention to the second and final round of TSS 2021 which will come up in just under two months’ time and will see the series return to Buriram, this time for a triple header.
