Ally Cadillac drivers Jimmie Johnson (El Cajon, Calif.), Kamui Kobayashi (Japan), Mike Rockenfeller (Germany), and José María López (Argentina) are currently fifth at the halfway point in IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship Rolex 24 At Daytona.
Kamui Kobayashi (double stint). He started his first stint fourth and finished second stint second. Led 16 laps.
“I had second stint tires,” Kobayashi said of his out lap heading into his second stint. “We had worn tires. I think that we had an advantage. We just saved the tires for the rest of the stint. I think we did quite well on the second stint. We kept the pace, and we took the lead.”
José María López (triple stint). He started his first stint fourth and finished his third stint in third. Ran as high as second.
“I’m happy with my stint,” López said. “In my first, second stint this afternoon, we suffered a lot of damage, so we had to make some changes. Luckily, the car recovered and that’s good news. I feel comfortable [in the car]. In terms of my pace, I was always in touch [with the leaders]. I’m happy with my run. I cleaned up mistakes. I’m getting better here at Daytona, which is good.
“When I had the contact this afternoon, I knew the car changed after that. It was very difficult [to drive]. I lost ground. But, we did not know how much damage was done. After we stopped for the second time, we saw the damage. Luckily with these cars, you can change the front and rear ends. We benefitted from the cautions and we’re back in the race. We’ve got a lot of race left. But, it’s good we have the pace now.”
