Gustav Malja is set for a significant career milestone when he slots into the seat of a Formula 1 car for the first time of his life later this year.

21-year-old Malja – who is currently racing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship – will take part in Formula 1’s official in-season test at the Hungaroring (Hungary) on 1-2 August, driving for the Sauber F1 Team on one of the days.

The test will see Malja undertake driving duties in the Sauber C36-Ferrari, handing the Swede his first-ever taste of the world’s fastest and most prominent motor racing series.

“The prospect of driving a Formula 1 car is exceptionally thrilling, and a childhood dream come true,” says Gustav Malja. “I can’t wait to experience that sensation; I’m sure it will be a very surreal moment. I will do everything in my power to make the most of the test day and learn as much as I possibly can. Wholehearted thanks to the Sauber F1 Team for giving me this fantastic opportunity.”

The Hungaroring in-season test takes place on the Tuesday and Wednesday following the Hungarian Grand Prix, which is staged on 28-30 July at the Budapest venue.

“It will be a great opportunity for Gustav to make another step in his racing career and to fulfil his childhood dream,” says Monisha Kaltenborn, team principal of the Sauber F1 Team. “Driving a Formula 1 car for the first time is always a special moment for race drivers – and so it is for Gustav. We have followed him throughout the past years, especially last year in the GP2 Series where he constantly made progress.”

The Sauber F1 Team is fielding Marcus Ericsson (Sweden) and Pascal Wehrlein (Germany) in the 2017 Formula 1 world championship.

Gustav Malja finished on the podium at last weekend’s Monaco Formula 2 round.
