12:42 – Daniil Kvyat will watch the next two Grands Prix from the sidelines after being replaced at Toro Rosso by Pierre Gasly. GPUpdate.net takes a look at some of Kvyat’s high points, and low moments, in Formula 1.

United States 2013

Kvyat, having tested for Toro Rosso at Silverstone mid-2013, makes his debut at a Grand Prix weekend, in the wake of his 2014 confirmation. Kvyat, in a fog-shortened session at the Circuit of the Americas, finishes in 17th place, one spot and two-tenths of a second behind team-mate Daniel Ricciardo.

Australia 2014

Kvyat makes it through to Q3 on his debut in tricky conditions and races to ninth place, within sight of team-mate Jean-Éric Vergne. Kvyat broke Sebastian Vettel’s record as the youngest-ever points-scorer, though it remained his best result of the campaign, as he finished the year with eight points.

Australia 2015

Kvyat steps up to Red Bull as a replacement for Vettel, but endures a dismal weekend in Australia. Kvyat suffers elimination from Q2 and is unable to even take up his 13th place on the grid due to a gearbox failure.

Hungary 2015

In a chaotic race at the Hungaroring, Kvyat is one of few drivers to stay out of trouble as he avoids the drama that befalls others. Kvyat’s approach nets him second position, marking his first podium in the sport.

Japan 2015

Kvyat, under pressure to deliver a strong Q3 time, dips a wheel onto the grass through the Turn 10 kink and is pitched sideways into the barriers, and spectacularly flips his RB11. The car sustains extensive damage, consigning Kvyat to a pit-lane start, from which he claims only 13th spot.

China 2016

In the wake of a difficult opening couple of rounds, Kvyat puts in a feisty performance in China, surviving an early brush with Vettel to net third place. Kvyat rightly brushes off Vettel’s complaints before heading out onto the podium to collect his trophy, with the German infamously labelling Kvyat as a ‘torpedo’ due to his approach.

Russia 2016

This time, Vettel’s anger is justified. Kvyat locks up into Turn 1 and nudges Vettel, and the Ferrari driver slows through Turn 3, a situation which catches out Kvyat, who hits the rear of his rival once more. Kvyat’s actions also hinder Ricciardo’s prospects, and he is demoted to Toro Rosso for the next race.

Spain 2016

Kvyat returns to Toro Rosso colours and faces a barrage of questions about the ‘seat swap’, revealing that he was watching Game of Thrones when informed of Red Bull’s decision. Kvyat fares well to take a point, but goes almost unnoticed as Max Verstappen claims a shock win in the car previously raced by Kvyat.

Singapore 2016

Kvyat struggles for much of his 2016 stint with Toro Rosso but puts in a starring drive around the streets of Singapore. “I’m feeling the passion again – I’m back to normal,” Kvyat declared, though it proves to be his only points finish across the second half of the campaign, as he remains in Carlos Sainz Jr.’s shadow.

Spain 2017

Kvyat qualifies as the slowest of the 20 drivers, adrift of Sainz Jr., and is left baffled by his lack of pace. However, Kvyat puts in a stirring drive in the race to rise up to ninth, equalling his best result with Toro Rosso.

Austria 2017

At Red Bull’s home race, Kvyat makes a crucial error on the approach to Turn 1 and triggers a collision which eliminates Verstappen and Fernando Alonso. One week later, at Silverstone, he is deemed culpable for causing contact with team-mate Sainz Jr., accentuating a fractious relationship in the wake of a sequence of near-misses. Kvyat, with the latter incident, edges closer to a race ban.

Singapore 2017

Kvyat remains within sight of Sainz Jr., after the Spaniard makes a poor getaway, but slides into the wall in damp conditions. Sainz Jr. goes on to record fourth, leaving their score at 48-4, and Toro Rosso uses the opportunity to bench Kvyat for Malaysia and Japan, in favour of Pierre Gasly.
