A rain cloud rolled over the track at 5:00 PM. No storm, just a single cloud, but it decided to drop rain on our event. 7:30 and track prep is still underway. It’s going to be fast.

Qualifying

Jonathan Davenport drew the 3rd pill tonight. He rolled off in the first set in group A. Davenport set quick time in Group A.

However, overall quick time came from group B. He lucked out with the rain delay but was still late the the track, missing hot laps. Despite that, Scott Bloomquist took the pole.

Billy Moyer was light at the scales. Heats are inverted.

Heat 1

Jason Feger to the early lead. But Davenport is slicing through the field. He started on the 2nd to last row.

6 to go, he’s up to 3rd. Caution. Earl Pearson Jr has stopped on track.

Green, Davenport looks to the outside for 2nd in turn 4. He’s got a fender on him but the door gets slammed shut. Slider, got it in turn 1.

1 to go, Davenport is on the back bumper of Feger. He looks low. Even out of turn 2. Feger is off his line. Davenport completes the pass in turn 4. Nose to tail at the line, Davenport wins heat 1

Heat 2

McCreadie and Shirley nearly wreck on lap 1 at the back. More trouble for Shirley a car had trouble off turn 2. Shirley joined the scene at full throttle. He launched, flat tire and a bunch of body damage.

The field has thinned in heat 2. Don O’Neal drives away, heat 2 winner.

Heat 3

Jason Rauen lost momentum on the cushion two restarts in a row. Both times he cut down off the top and to the middle. Josh Richards was looking 3 wide in middle, both times. Richards hit the brakes the first time. The 2nd time, it was too late to lift. The #98 bounced off Richards and turned hard right into the wall. Big impact.

Heat 5

Billy Moyer Jr leads in turn 1. But he has to lift completely out of the throttle to avoid the wall out of turn 2. The whole field goes by.

Steve Francis was talking about a possible retirement earlier in the night. Now he leads heat 5 by 3 seconds.

Francis wins heat 5.

B Main

Scott Bloomquist had a full second lead on Gregg Satterlee. Caution.

1 to go, Bloomquist checks out. Picking up where he left off, he wins the B Main.

Green, Don O’Neal slides Kyle Bronson in turn 1. Don O’Neal to 2nd. This track is bad fast and rough tonight. The extra bit of rain is the cause.

Caution, Hudson O’Neal is in trouble.

Green. Landers to the lead. Jimmy Owens is around O’Neal for 2nd. Landers jumps the cushion in turn 1. Jimmy Owens rolls the bottom. He pulls even with Landers off turn 2. Coming from the top, Landers has more speed off the corner. He pulls Owens down the back.

Caution. Debris.

Quotes

Josh Richards: “We had a really good car,” said the winner in Lucas Oil Victory Lane. “I hate it for Jimmy. He had a good car as well. I am not sure whether an oil line came off or what. Our car felt good on the bottom. We need to work on it some for Saturday’s big one. That cushion up against the wall was a little too treacherous for me. It feels good to get a win tonight. “

“The car was really fast. This track is tricky. We have never won the big one here at Knoxville so this would be a good weekend to get it done. To get a big night under our belts like tonight means a lot. We will work on it tomorrow and hopefully be even better tomorrow night. “

Jared Landers: “Thanks to all the crew guys for their help. This is a brand-new car – the first-time we have been on the track with it. I am happy right now. We had a good shot to win tonight.”

Jonathan Davenport: “I finally found a line I liked out there. It was tricky through one and two there. We will take some good notes from tonight and be ready for tomorrow night.”
