DOVER, Del. — Martin Truex Jr. turned on the speed during the third round of qualifying Friday at Dover Int’l Speedway to claim the pole for Sunday’s Apache Warrior 400.
The event will be the third round of NASCAR’s playoffs and Toyotas will occupy five of the top six positions on the grid with Truex and Kyle Busch, who was quickest during the first two rounds of qualifying, sharing the front row.
Interestingly, the two drivers also won the first two races of the playoffs with Truex triumphing at Chicagoland Speedway and Busch winning at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Truex’s best lap of the one-mile concrete oval was 22.407 seconds (160.664 mph).
“Hats off to all the guys,” said Truex, who also won this race last year. “The car was awesome today. We just had to put it all together. The balance was off a little bit in the first two rounds and we just had to put it all together in the third round.”
Busch was second at 22.445 seconds, while Kyle Larson, in a Chevrolet, was third.
Busch’s Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Matt Kenseth, Daniel Suarez and Denny Hamlin completed the top six.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. was seventh in a Chevrolet.
