NASCAR inspection process set to change
NASCAR pre-race tech – New inspection technology
It’s never a good thing when the race winner is found to have an illegal part. Days after the race, the word ‘encumbered’ is blasted on our social feeds. But, what if NASCAR could catch that before the race?
That’s ideal and that’s the goal. NASCAR has some ideas. Meetings with the industry are in place to change the pre-race inspection process.
“We’re gunna have a new inspection technology that can really change how we inspect the cars [potentially] pre-race,” Steve O’Donnell told Sirius XM NASCAR Radio.
“We’ve got a meeting with the industry coming up in about 3 weeks to discuss how we want to go about that. That could really change some of the aspects that even fall into post-race inspection.”
“Do you do that every time? Do you use that as a learning tool?,” O’Donnell refers to post-race inspection.
“So, that’s kinda the first part. Is looking at inspection, in general. And then we’ll certainly look at [encumbered] wins.”

When Denny Hamlin was hit with a dual encumbered win, the fans were in outrage. “Take away the win,” they said. Well, NASCAR is considering exactly that.

“The challenge for us is, how far do you go? Do you automatically award that t0 2nd? It’s a little bit of a challenge there. It’s not something that we have ignored. We will certainly discuss it.
“But, I think on our end, the real solution is to try and get our inspection process to where we’re straight up before the race. Then we go racing and we talk about the race winner.”
