NASCAR Penalizes JGR & Mike Wheeler
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — NASCAR officials have announced penalties and fines from this past weekend’s races at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway.
The No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series was handed a L1-level penalty. Crew chief Mike Wheeler was fined $50,000 and suspended for two races and the team was assessed with the loss of 25 owner points and 25 driver points and Denny Hamlin’s victory was ruled encumbered.
In addition, Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s No. 88 Hendrick Motorsports team was penalized for having lug nuts that were not properly installed following 22nd-place finish. As a result, crew chief Greg Ives was fined $20,000 and suspended for this weekend’s race at Richmond (Va.) Raceway. Hendrick Motorsports will not appeal the penalty.
The No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing XFINITY Series team was handed a penalty, with crew chief Eric Phillips fined $25,000 and suspended for two races after Hamlin’s victory on Saturday at Darlington. The team was penalized 25 owner points and the finish was declared encumbered.
The No. 22 Team Penske XFINITY Series team was penalized 25 owner points and crew chief Greg Irwin was fined $25,000.
