NICO VERDONCK BACK IN THE GREEN HELL WITH DORR MOTORSPORT
Still the race lap record holder in the VLN Championship, Nico Verdonck will once again be back on the Nürburgring’s Nordschleife in this 2018 season. The 32 year old Brussel based driver, ranked Silver on the FIA scale, will be joining the ranks of Dörr Motorsport. The German team, based at Butzbach will enter two Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo during two VLN events prior to focussing on the most important meeting of the season: the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring, programmed on the 12th and 13th May.
On one of the two mounts shod with Giti Tire rubbers, Nico Verdonck will be teamed up with Marc Basseng, Manuel Lauck and Andreas Weishaupt, in other words a fearsome quartet of drivers knowing the Nordschleife like the back of their hand as also the 24 Hours of the Eifel. “ I had been in contact with Robin Dörr since my lap record back in 2016 with the Ford GT”, the Belgian smiled. “Dörr Motorsport is a team that has been in existence near on 20 years and is well versed with the subject matter. The Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo is a formidable weapon that will allow us to aim for victory in our category. Last year I enjoyed a wonderful experience with the Bentley Team ABT, but unfortunately the team opted not to continue with the programme in 2018. On the other hand everything I had learnt will be put to good use with Dörr Motorsport. I will be discovering the Giti Tire range and I’m delighted to be able to share my experience with the engineers.”
From the Dörr Motorsport perspective, they are delighted to be able to count on Nico Verdonck for these three races. ”We chose Nico not only for his top speed, but also for his knowledge on such a difficult circuit as the Nürburgring”, Robin Dörr, the Team Manager explained.” It’s not a coincidence that to this day Nico still holds the race lap record on the Nordschleife in VLN version. This Saturday 17th March, a collective test session will be the first opportunity for Nico Verdonck to become acquainted with the team and the Huracán Super Trofeo. “We had foreseen some tests earlier, but the weather conditions had different ideas,” he specified. “No matter, as from Saturday we will start preparing for the VLN races on 24th and 7th April. Following that it will be high time to fully concentrate on the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring. For that matter I am still working on different projects to expand my season. As a Silver ranked driver certain teams have shown an interest in me and I hope to be able to announce other good news shortly. But in the meantime I’m heading off for the Nürburgring!”
