Tiago Monteiro has recorded another great victory in the FIA World Touring Car Championship, WTCC, this time in Hungary. The Portuguese driver reached the top step of the podium in race 1 after taking command of the race from the start. In race two, the Honda racer moved up from ninth on the grid to cross the finish line in fifth place, consolidating his first position in the world championship, becoming the favorite to win the title.
Although the Honda Civic did not show the same performance as it has done in previous races, the reverse grid principle went in favor of Tiago putting his second on the starting grid for the first race. A brilliant start allowed him to take the lead and he hung on tight until the checkered flag. “I knew the start would be important, everything went well and I was leading, but it was a difficult race because I was under constant pressure and I could not slow down without taking a risk of being overtaken. I was in front, but I still had my eyes in the mirror. The race was exhausting, but it was well worth the effort,” said Tiago.
For the second race, starting ninth on the grid, Tiago sought to avoid the usual melee of the midfield, while still trying to score as many points as possible. “I was careful, I tried not to take too many risks, and I tried to score big points for the championship. It is important to continue to add victories and podiums but above all we must not lose a single point! I think we are on the right track to reach the goal we set at the start of the season, the fight for the title,” he concluded.
Tiago finished the fourth round of the championship, one of the toughest of the season, with a substantial advance in the world championship before the next round takes place on the Nordschleife circuit on May 25-27.
