A two-time CART champion in 1997 and 1998, Zanardi’s career nearly ended following a crash at the Germany’s Lausitzring in 2001 that resulted in the loss of both of his legs.
Zanardi defied the odds and returned to racing in the World Touring Car Championship from 2005 to 2009, winning four times while driving a specially modified BMW entry. He has also competed more recently in the Blancpain Sprint Series.
Away from the race track Zanardi has become well known for his success in handcycle racing. He’s won four gold medals and two silver medals during the Paralympics in 2012 and 2016.
