The American Kart Racing Association (AKRA) is pleased to announce the first of many big events that will headline the 2016 Road Race and American Sprint Cup Series programs.
AKRA will welcome 2-cycle and 4-cycle road racers and sprint racers to Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC, for a season-opening doubleheader event March 18-20, 2016. The event will kick off the second annual AKRA Road Race Series Presented by Vega Tire on CMP’s 2.3-mile road course and serve as the much-anticipated inaugural event for the new AKRA American Sprint Cup Series at the 0.7-mile CMP Kart Track.
ROAD RACE
After a year away from the challenging CMP road course, AKRA is proud to welcome back road racers to the popular South Carolina venue. The March 18-20 event at Kershaw will open a 2016 series that already has two dates secured at Michigan International Speedway – May 20-22 and Sept. 23-25. Officials are working to confirm other dates and tracks that will complete the 2016 AKRA Road Race Series. More announcements are coming soon.
SPRINT CUP
A great amount of anticipation and energy are surrounding the new 2016 AKRA American Sprint Cup Series. Karters are contacting AKRA officials on a near daily basis regarding the program, and continuous dialogue is taking place between racers and officials on the structure of the new program.
The March 18-20 event at CMP will kick off a series that will feature several races in 2016, including both 4-cycle and 2-cycle divisions. AKRA is currently working with tracks in the north and the south to piece together a program that will be attractive to 2-cycle and 4-cycle sprint teams on the East Coast and Midwest.
Other tracks secured (no official dates yet) are the Palmetto Super Track in Elgin, SC, and the 103rd Street Sports Complex in Jacksonville, FL.
AKRA is working to secure official dates as soon as possible so families can make their 2016 plans. Class structures, event formats and other rules will be announced soon.
