Nissan will reach a crucial milestone later this month when it tests its Season Five ABB FIA Formula E Championship car according to Global Director of Motorsport Michael Carcamo.

The Japanese manufacturer gave notice of entering Formula E last October in order to lead a concerted marketing campaign for its electric vehicles.

It is already an EV sales leader in Europe with the highly successful Nissan Leaf.

The manufacturer will run at the first group test in Spain later this month after unveiling its future challenger at the Geneva International Motor Show last week.

“The test is another milestone and it’s a milestone that’s in our planning and it’s in our minds every day,” Carcamo told e-racing365.

“We started this two years ago, when we expressed us joining [to the Nissan board] in Tokyo.

“Today [at Geneva] you are seeing the first physical manifestation of the concept and then Monteblanco is the first real test of the work that we’ve been doing.”

As expected, Carcamo also confirmed that the e.dams team will run the Monteblanco test from an operational and technical viewpoint.

“Operationally DAMS will be running the test but that’s just part of the agreement that we have to get our development done,” said Carcamo.

“We need to focus on getting the car running, working and learning about the car too, that’s our primary focus. The other things will fall into place.”

Nissan has been conducting its R&D since last year with significant dyno and simulation time having already been conducted, but Carcamo was wary on expressing any predictions for the new program.

“Until you have that final shakedown, you still having your fingers crossed and I think Monteblanco is just the next step but there’s many more along the way until the season starts,” he explained.

“We will very much take it all one step at a time.”

E-racing365 understands that Nissan has recently completed the necessary registration to change the official manufacturer name from Renault in readiness for Season Five.
