Formula 1 tyre supplier Pirelli has confirmed that it will create seven slick compounds for the 2018 season, introducing the Hyper Soft tyre, and a Super Hard compound, the latter an ‘insurance policy’.
Pirelli adopted a cautious approach with regards to its 2017 compound selections, after adopting wider tyres, with Formula 1 introducing quicker cars.
On Thursday at Yas Marina, Pirelli presented its expanded range, with a pink-banded Hyper Soft and orange-ringed Super Hard added to its existing five compounds.
The Hyper Soft was selected as the name for the new softest compound following an online poll, receiving a 62 per cent share of the vote.
The Super Hard has been introduced as an ‘insurance policy’, with all slick compounds to feature fresh constructions and working ranges, as Pirelli shifts towards a more aggressive stance than 2017.
With the Super Hard taking on an orange colour, the Hard tyre will shift to an ‘ice blue’, with the remaining compounds unchanged with regards to livery.
Formula 1 teams will trial the revised tyre range for the first time during next week’s test at the Yas Marina Circuit, with each squad set to field one car on Tuesday and Wednesday.
As per the 2017 regulations, three compounds will be selected for each Grand Prix.
The Intermediate and Wet tyres will also feature ‘some technical improvements’ for 2018, and have not been changed in terms of colour.
