Gustav Malja completed a successful first Formula 1 test on Tuesday, enjoying a positive introduction to Grand Prix racing with the Sauber F1 Team at Budapest’s Hungaroring circuit.
In his first-ever F1 outing, Malja – who is spending 2017 racing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship – racked up a total of 108 trouble-free laps behind the wheel of the Sauber C36-Ferrari, completing his scheduled run plan without incident.
The programme saw Malja conducting several stints throughout the day, working on aerodynamic and mechanical tests for the Swiss team.
Gradually building his confidence throughout the day, Swede Malja worked his way down to a 1m21.503s best at the end of running.
“It has been a great day for me,” says Gustav Malja. “Driving a Formula 1 car is something that I have been working towards and wanting since I was a child, and now it has become a reality. Overall, the experience has been a very positive one for me, and I have learned a lot for my development as a racing driver. We managed to complete our programme, and I did my best to implement all of the input from the team. I am happy to have completed this test successfully for the Sauber F1 Team.”
Gustav Malja will return to his regular duties in Formula 2 on August 25-27, when the championship resumes at the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps.
