All ferrari front row for the race tomorrow
Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel provided the perfect response to Formula 1 Drivers Championship rival Lewis Hamilton breezing to victory at Silverstone two weeks ago as the German clinched his 48th career pole in Hungary with a blistering 1:16.276, a new lap record around the Hungaroring.
The title-chasing leader overcame all others as he continued his good pace from the morning FP3 session, including teammate Kimi Raikkonen, who was able to put himself alongside Vettel for Sunday’s race and maximise the team’s chances of a high points finish with a front row lockout.
Even though there were no engine penalties this time for either Mercedes driver they were still unable to find the pace to match the Ferrari, with Hamilton struggling most – particularly in turn four where the Brit found himself off the track as he attempted a flying lap in Q3.
The three-time world champion will have his work cut out quite considerably on a track where he has won five times in the past, finding himself in P4 with teammate Valtteri Bottas alongside him in P3.
The third row of the grid sees the Red Bull of Max Verstappen alongside teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who had topped both of Friday’s timesheets, but following an electrical issue during FP3 was unable to replicate that pace during any of the qualifying sessions.
A P7 finish for Niko Hulkenberg was impressive as the German once again found himself in Q3, unlike his partner Jolyon Palmer who will only start 11th on the grid.
However, the biggest surprise of the weekend so far has to be the McLaren Honda pairing of Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne, who found themselves both in Q3 for the first time this season.
As has been a regularity this season the veteran got the better of his younger counterpart, but with only three-hundredths of a second separating the teammates they could well find themselves alongside one another into the first corner.
Further down the field it was again another poor showing from Williams, who have seemingly had every ounce of power sucked dry from their car since Lance Stroll’s podium finish in Baku.
The young Canadian with start in P17, two places ahead of stand-in driver Paul di Resta who took the place of Felipe Massa after the Brazilian was removed from proceedings due to ill-health. The 31-year-old reserve had never driven the 2017 car before Saturday and has not taken part in a race since 2013 so it’s unlikely to see the Scot progressing up the field substantially enough to take the headlines on Sunday.
So as the F1 campaign heads into the summer break Vettel will be hoping he still remains in top spot and that Ferrari have closed the gap on Mercedes in the Constructer’s Championship, something that should be the case barring any mitigating circumstances considering the Hungaroring’s lack of overtaking spots.
