The BRDC British Formula 3 Championship grid heads to Rockingham this weekend (30 April/1 May) for round three of the 2016 season, as a fascinating title battle continues to develop with Lanan Racing’s Toby Sowery currently heading the standings.
The large field will take to the International Super Sports Car layout for three races across the weekend and will once again co-headline the meeting with the British GT Championship. Sowery claimed his maiden BRDC British F3 win last time out at Brands Hatch and along with another podium finish, now leads the way with 127 points.
Carlin’s Ricky Collard sits 19 points behind in second as the 19-year-old enjoyed an extremely consistent weekend in Kent, clawing back lost ground from a disappointing first round of the year at Snetterton. The Hampshire-based driver is yet to take to the top step of the podium this year but two runner-up finishes on the Grand Prix circuit at Brands leaves him right in the thick of the title fight.
Australian Thomas Randle took his first podium finish in the championship with a strong drive from 14th to third in the final race at Brands Hatch and now has 93 points, after putting together a string of consistent results. He sits in third, just one point ahead of both Double R Racing’s Matheus Leist and his Douglas Motorsport team-mate Enaam Ahmed. Leist and Ahmed, who have led the way in the overall standings at some stage this year, suffered difficulties last time out but with Leist having already won two races this season and Ahmed one, they have the pace to challenge right at the front this weekend.
A further point behind in sixth sits Leist’s Double R team-mate Finn Aleksanteri Huovinen. The 19-year-old is just ahead of HHC Motorsport’s Sisa Ngebulana and Sean Walkinshaw Racing’s Thomas Maxwell, with all three showing the potential to compete at the front of the field. 2015 MSA Formula champion Lando Norris returns to BRDC British F3 action this weekend, having missed the previous round due to clashing commitments, and will be looking to carry over the form of his stand-in Colton Herta, who took victory in the third and final race of the weekend at Brands Hatch.
Qualifying at Rockingham on Saturday gets underway at 10:55 with the 15-lap race one starting at 15:05.Sunday’s BRDC British F3 action begins with race two at 09:50 with lights out to start race three at 15:45. All the action from the weekend both on and off the track will be available to watch through the one-hour highlights programme broadcast on ITV4 one week after the meeting.
