China Electric Touring Car Challenge Launched
A Chinese electric touring car series will be launched in Oct. 2018 and will race throughout the country, it was announced recently.
The China Electric Touring Car Challenge is targeting city racing in its first full season and will be run by the FRD Motorsports promotions company.
The genesis of the series came at the 2016 Hong Kong E-Prix when a pilot race took place on the ABB FIA Formula E Championship harborside track.
Sixteen cars took part in this race with the field made up of both domestic professional Chinese racers and some celebrities.
Since then, FRD has collated significant interest from participants and potential race venues to officially launch the first season, which is set to run from Oct. 2018 to May 2019.
Technically, FRD will be applying street-going EV technology alongside newly-designed aero parts and electronic enhancements to a multi-manufacturer field of cars.
No details on the proposed calendar have yet been made public but an initial race in October is said to be followed by another in December.
China’s EV100 vice secretary Liu Xiaoshi and China Automobile Industry Association deputy secretary Gao Qianqian both attended the recent launch of the series.
