Back in 1950, Silverstone was the venue of the first Formula One GP in the history of the sport – and the first race meeting of the 2017 FIA Formula 3 European Championship also will be held at the circuit located in the heart of England. After a one-year break, the young guns racing in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship will return to the 5.901-kilometre long circuit that will also stage the British F1 Grand Prix later this year. With Jake Dennis (Carlin), Maximilian Günther (Prema Powerteam) and Callum Ilott (Prema Powerteam), three of this year’s drivers already contested the British race meeting in 2015 but only one of them, Jake Dennis, made it to the podium.
Jake Dennis even finished third in two of the three races of the season opener to also finish third in the championship at the end of the year. After a year in the GP3 series he returns to Formula 3 where he will also use his experience to support the three rookies in the Carlin line-up. But in the tests in Hungary and Austria, all three young guns – Lando Norris, Ferdinand Habsburg and Jehan Daruvala – demonstrated that they quickly familiarised themselves with the new series. The three young talents could be found on positions at the top of the timing sheets during pre-season testing.
In addition to Dennis and Norris, who is supported by the McLaren F1 Team, the grid features another three drivers who are looking forward to their home race meeting at Silverstone: Jake Hughes (Hitech Grand Prix), Callum Ilott and Harrison Newey (Van Amersfoort Racing). These three talents also impressed in the pre-season testing and now want to tie in with these performances by securing their first points and trophies.
Making a prediction is more difficult than ever this year, as no team can rest on its laurels, due to an upgrade of chassis manufacturer Dallara all teams started development from the same base line. But one thing can be taken for granted: the motivated and ambitious young drivers will give their very best to follow the footsteps or reigning FIA Formula 3 European Champion Lance Stroll. Right after having won the title, the 18-year old Canadian succeeded in securing a Formula 1 GP seat for the 2017 season.
Lando Norris (Carlin): “I contested just one race weekend at Silverstone so far, but have been there for testing several times. I generally like the circuit and think that we will provide the crowds with thrilling motor racing action. Of course it also is nice to start into my first full FIA Formula 3 European Championship season in my home country – although it’s a four-hour drive away from where I live. My goal is to secure positions at the very top in both the qualifying sessions and the races. But due to the technical updates on the cars, predicting if I really will be able to do so currently is difficult. The official days of testing demonstrated that all drivers are really quick, the gaps between the fastest and the slowest drivers having been tiny. So, succeeding won’t be too easy but I’m happy that the season will finally begin.”
