Luke Mossey says he was thrilled to secure his maiden MCE British Superbike championship race win and ‘over the moon’ to double up at Brands Hatch Indy as he makes strides as a BSB title contender.
The JG Speedfit Kawasaki rider ended his 54 BSB race run without a victory by dominating at Brands Hatch Indy to secure a maiden double victory to follow up team-mate Leon Haslam’s double at the 2017 season opener at Donington Park.
Mossey admitted it was a monkey off of his back to get a first BSB race win and was in dreamland when he was able to produce back-to-back wins and ignite a potential BSB title charge.
“I was delighted with the first one and was going to come away happy if I could stay in the top five for the second one to keep the points coming in,” Mossey said. “But to get my first two wins at one round in my British Superbike career I am over the moon and can’t thank the team enough.
“I’ve never had such a strong start to a season in my career, including British Supersport, so I’m already looking forward to Oulton Park as we finished second there to Leon Haslam last year, so the we know the Kawasaki works well there so hopefully we can maintain that momentum.
“We’ve got the Oulton Park test later this week so I can’t celebrate too hard but maybe on Friday night we will have a couple of beers before focusing on round three.”
Assessing the races, Mossey admitted he was forced to abort his initial plan of following early leader James Ellison ahead of a late charge after the McAMS Yamaha fell at Druids but was able to measure his race pace to ease to victory by an impressive 3.5 seconds.
Despite not having the same advantage in race two even without Ellison in contention, who missed the start due to a technical issue sustained from his race one off, Mossey largely avoided any attacks from Haslam and Iddon to claim a historic double victory.
The wins also ensured only JG Speedfit Kawasaki riders have made it to the top step of the BSB podium in 2017.
“In race one James set a really strong pace at the start and I wasn’t outside my comfort zone but I was pushing on and fortunately for me he went down,” he said. “For the first couple of laps I felt a bit lost when I was leading on my own as I didn’t want to be leading but we tried to maintain the mid 45s lap times to edge it out.
“I was quite surprised to win by over three seconds at the end of the race. I didn’t think we had that much pace but I guess Leon and Christian were beating each other up during the race which gave us a helping hand.
“But to win my first races and at my local circuit I am just over the moon and now I just want more.”
