Victory at Donington Park, lap record at Thruxton; Linus Lundqvist has got the wind in his sails in British Formula 4. As the championship moves into round four of the season at Oulton Park, however, the Double R Racing Swede is determined to convert his indubitable pace into even stronger results.
“We’ve had a couple of good weekends now, for sure, but at the same time we’ve seen that the potential is there for more,” says Linus Lundqvist. “We’ve had the pace to win several races, but for various reasons it hasn’t always come together. The aim this weekend is to first and foremost maintain the sort of performance we’ve enjoyed lately, but also to actually convert it into the sort of results we think that we deserve.”
Lundqvist netted a second place as his best finish last time out at Thruxton, on a weekend which saw him out-score many of his immediate rivals as he continues to make up ground following the nightmare triple retirement at April’s Brands Hatch opener.
The Thruxton results, coupled with a double podium at the previous round at Donington Park, have seen Lundqvist haul himself into sixth place in the championship standings – where he now sits just eight points adrift of third-placed Oliver York.
Heading into Oulton Park, the 18-year-old Stockholm resident is hoping to slowly but surely continue to shrink the gap.
“We’re in the chase now, and there are still 21 out of 30 races left to go,” Lundqvist concludes. “There’s no point rushing it; if we just continue to work hard and maintain our current pace, then the rest will follow. I’m focussing on becoming a better and faster driver every time I’m in the car – that’s the main bit. Still, it’s always nice to have some small targets to aim for each weekend, and this time around I think trying to leave Oulton Park in third place in the standings could be a realistic ambition.”
The weekend will get underway with two 45-minute practice sessions tomorrow (Friday), followed by qualifying and the first two races of the meeting on Saturday. The third and final race takes place on Sunday afternoon.
