Fallon Setting His Career Sights At Home
2016 Burson Rookie of the Year Simon Fallon has looked back fondly on his two seasons in the CAMS Jayco Australian Formula 4 Championship.
Impressing on debut at Phillip Island in 2016 with DREAM Motorsport, Fallon stepped up to become a CAMS Foundation Rising Star driver with Team BRM.
“It has definitely gone a lot faster than last year. It doesn’t feel like it’s been a year,” Fallon said.
“The highlights have been having fun with my mates in Formula 4. All of us go out, have fun, race hard on track, but at the end of the day we can all go out for dinner and have a good laugh. That’s definitely been a big positive for this year.
“On track, it hasn’t been too great but off track it’s been really good. Either way, I’ve had fun.”
Fallon acknowledges that his second season didn’t entirely go his way, but through adversity he has seen the season as an important part of his development. A round victory at his home track of Phillip Island this year being his career best result.
“I feel like we’ve had a lot of ups and a lot of downs, but I think those downs teach you how to take it and move on from it,” Fallon added.
“Even though you have bad rounds here and there, it’s good to experience them and go into the next round.
“At the end of the day, we’re in a junior formula category. It’s not the end of the world if we don’t win. It’s all about learning and focusing to make sure every time I go to the track, we learn something new. It’s definitely different since I’ve jumped out of karts, it’s been an awesome new experience.”
The Gold Coast in 2016 was a breakthrough round for Fallon, scoring his first race win and round podium at the venue. He was on track to replicate his success on the Gold Coast this year, but was ultimately content with third for the round.
“I really loved it there, it’s mega fun… being able to take kerbs, destroy things on street circuits,” Fallon said.
“You see it on TV and you sit back thinking it looks really sketchy, but when you go out on track you’re having fun. It’s something special.”
With drivers now presented with racing options in Australia and abroad, Fallon has his sights firmly set on a successful career in Australia.
“I feel like motor sport itself has really grown as a sport now,” Fallon said.
“We can stay in Australia, there’s heaps of categories, GT3, there’s a long list of categories you can race in let alone having to go to Europe.
“I’d like to go to Supercars… something V8 related is what I’d like to be in. But again it’s motor sport, everything changes by the hour. Nothing’s 100 per cent sure but that’s the goal.”
