Danish racer Jonck graduates to BRDC F4 with Sean Walkinshaw Racing
Sean Walkinshaw Racing has today signed Dane Jan Jonck for its BRDC Formula 4 team for the 2016 season, after a successful test at Silverstone earlier this month. The 17-year-old graduates to the championship having raced in ADAC Formula 4 in 2015.
The teenager, who hails from Skodstrup in Denmark, enjoyed a strong karting career in his native Scandinavia and won the 2012 Junior Rotax Nordic Championship. He stepped up to racing single-seaters in 2014 and finished as runner-up in the Danish Formula Ford Championship with seven wins and eight further podium finishes.
That preceded a move into ADAC Formula 4, the official FIA-backed German F4 series, for 2015 and he will now race in BRDC Formula 4 with the more powerful Tatuus-Cosworth in 2016. Jonck joins South African Eugene Denyssen at the Chipping Norton-based outfit for the upcoming season.
Jonck said: “I’m really looking forward to racing in the BRDC Formula 4 Championship this year. The car is really fast with the great aerodynamics and amazing power from the Cosworth engine, it’s a joy to drive. I think this will be a great stepping stone and learning experience for me, and I’m sure we will be competitive. But, the learning curve is big so for now it’s heads down so we can make as much progress before the first race weekend at Snetterton.”
Sean Walkinshaw, team owner of Sean Walkinshaw Racing, added: “We’re really pleased Jan is joining Eugene in the team this year. He’s a young driver with a lot of potential and has obviously achieved some good results in Formula Ford. The step up from ADAC Formula 4 into BRDC F4 is a notable one, we’ve got more power and much more grip with the BRDC car, but we’re sure Jan is going to make significant progress during the season.”
The 2016 BRDC Formula 4 Championship gets underway at Snetterton on March 27/28.
