Australian Thomas Maxwell has joined Sean Walkinshaw Racing (SWR) for the 2016 BRDC Formula 4 Championship season, it has been confirmed today (15 March), completing the Chipping Norton-based team’s line-up.

Maxwell, who hails from Darwin in the Northern Territory, has been testing one of SWR’s Tatuus-Cosworth single-seaters in recent weeks and has now committed to the Oxfordshire outfit for the year. The 17-year-old graduates to BRDC F4 from his native Formula Ford Championship, in which he finished fourth overall last year, and will join Danish teenager Jan Jonck and South African driver Eugene Denyssen in a cosmopolitan three-car entry.

The teenager took four podiums from six rounds of the Australian Formula Ford series in 2015 and made his ‘slicks and wings’ debut earlier this year in the Formula Masters Winter GP in Sepang, Malaysia, where he finished in second place.

Maxwell said: “I’m super excited to be signing with SWR in such a fantastic championship. It’s a credit to everyone back in Australia who’s shown support and helped me get to this level. Everyone at the team is incredibly professional; I’m looking forward to a strong year!”

Sean Walkinshaw, owner of SWR, added: “Tom has gone very well in testing over the last few weeks and we are absolutely delighted he has signed with SWR for the 2016 season. Obviously a lot is going to be new for him, the circuits and the car, but he has shown a lot of ability and commitment so far and I’m sure he’s going to be a fantastic competitor during his first season of racing outside Australia.”

The Australian will make his first on-track appearance as a BRDC Formula 4 driver at today’s media day at Snetterton, before returning to the Norfolk track for the opening round of the year on March 27/28.
