Monza’s official tests open the season of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europa
The 2017 season of the Super Trofeo Europe has already started from Monza. On April 11-12, Lamborghini Squadra Corse organized two days of official pre-season tests on the same racetrack hosting on April 21-23 the first of the six rounds of the European series.
Over 25 cars and more than 40 drivers officially kicked off the ninth edition of the famous Lamborghini one-make series, with two intense test days in open pit lane format, with extended sessions from morning to night.
Many are the familiar faces related to the European series, both teams and drivers, but at the Monza circuit there were also some innovations that will animate the 2017 edition of the Super Trofeo Europe.
Such as for example the new Pro crew fielded by Imperiale Racing: at his first absolute debut behind the wheel of a Huracan Super Trofeo there will be Jonathan Cecotto, 17-year-old Venezuelan, son of the motorcycle and F.1 legend Johnny Alberto, who has joined the field of GT cars after some experience in karting and F.4. After the two test days, Cecotto immediately drew attention to himself by entering the top five list of the fastest times. Throughout the racing season, there will be a guarantee beside him: Vito Postiglione, who did an excellent 2016 season in the Super Trofeo.
Another duo to consider among the Pro drivers is the one formed by Rik Breukers and Axcil Jefferies, who literally dominated each of the three rounds of the Super Trofeo Middle East, last February. The two young and fast drivers will defend the colors of the team GDL Racing also in Europe.
After the positive experience of the Super Trofeo Middle East, also the pairing of Konrad Motorsport formed by Hendrik Still and Paul Scheuschner will be participating in the European series for the first time, in the Pro-Am category.
Finally, following the Middle Eastern championship introduced by Lamborghini in Abu Dhabi and Dubai this year, also Davide Roda will be debuting in Europe with the team Antonelli Motorsport. At Monza, this driver shared the cockpit of a Huracan Super Trofeo with Kikko Galbiati. The latter, after drawing attention to himself during some practice sessions in the past season, he was one of the fastest drivers during Monza’s test sessions.
The team Antonelli also fielded another skillful duo, who will be participating in the Super Trofeo Europe in the Pro class: Loris Spinelli, an expert of the one-make series, and the 24-year-old Canadian, Mikael Grenier. In the four practice sessions, the pairing of Antonelli Motorsport set the second fastest time overall (1’47”480), behind Navarro/Brichè of MN Development, who were the fastest with 1’47”387.
The team VS Racing, instead, took part in the tests with the Brazilian Raphael Abbate and the Japanese Yuki Nemoto. They were also at their debut in the series and proved to be one of the fastest crews by setting a best time of 1’48”193.
The first race of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe is scheduled on Saturday, April 22 at 3:00 p.m. CET. Race 2 will take place on Sunday 23 at 11:20 a.m. CET.
